A new contact lense wearer?!

Question: In about a week, I'm going to be examined for contact lenses. I have astigmatism and I'm a little nervous getting contacts. I'm told I'll have to get toric contacts and my research has said they are pretty expensive.

I wondered if anyone has any reassuring comments or pointers for me?

Do you actually touch your eyeball when putting the contact in and taking it out? How expensive are contacts? Do you have to get new ones each month?

I'm very nervous and wonder if I should just stick with glasses after all.

I too have astigmatism and have to wear toric lenses. Yes, they are pricey compared to regular contacts, but if they aren't toric, you won't be able to see. Don't be nervous! Once you get the hang of it you will love them. I am so glad I made the change about 4 months ago. I was tired of glasses, although I do keep them around if I don't wanna wear contacts. As far as touching your eyeball, you just have to touch the lens to your eye obviously getting them in. They may be a bit hard at first to get in and out, but it'll be super easy after about a week. Don't wear them for a full day either in the beginning as that may give you headaches and you will want to let your eyes adjust to being able to see everything. For the first day wear for a couple hours and increase the amount of time each day 2 hours until you get up to a full 12 hour day...then after that you'll be able to wear them all the time. I suggest getting some rewetting drops because the toric may dry your eyes out in the beginning. Normally with toric lenses you can do 30 day ones and get a 6 month supply which cost me around $95. I also have a pair of colored toric lenses which are good for a year, but those were expensive, $230. So yeah, I mean contacts are pricey but well worth it if you are able to take the time to take care of them and don't have any problems taking them in and out, which you should be just fine. They will make sure before they let you leave that you know how to put them in and take them out the right way. I hope this helps and good luck with hopefully getting contacts!! :-)

There's no need to worry...you don't touch your "eyeball"...it does take some practice..they won't let you leave until your comfortable with taking them in and out...
Some contacts can be expensive, depending on what you get..your dr will give you more info...as for getting new ones each month, they usually have a package deal..like for me, i had enuff to last for a year...if your not comfy with the contacts...then you can go back to your glasses...but it is worth the try!!

you'll get used to it, trust me. I have never worn toric lenses so I don't have any pointers for that, but I could give you a million for soft lenses. Either way, you will get used to your fingers that close to your eyes. Also, be patient with the time frame it takes to get used to having something in your eyes. It will be uncomfortable at first, but worth it! :) good luck!

Contacts aren't bad at all. They just take a little time getting used to them. I have astigmatism and I just got a new years worth of contacts. My doctor gave me Aquvue Advance for Astigmatism with Hydraclear. They feel amazing! My vision is soo much clearer with this brand than any others. (Been wearing contacts for 8 years) Ask your doctor about this brand, they are for astigmatism so i don't see why you couldn't try them.

Mine cost me like $200 for a year, but it can be different for you because I have crappy insurance! =) Best Wishes!!
