How do I clean dirt and oil off my glasses, without leaving streaks?!

Question: My glasses are always dirty from oil and other gunk, and washing with water and soap does them no good, nor do lens cloths for some reason. Whenever I use my lens cloth it leaves massive streaks...I haven't looked through a clear pair of glasses for quite a while now and it is extrememly frustrating. Does anyone know how I can clean my glasses properly so that I can actually see through them?

Are you sure it's dirt, and not scratches? Soap & warm water should get rid of just about any oily residue. If that seriously doesn't work, I'd recommend a de-greaser. Sometimes, you can find these in the kitchen cleaning section at the grocery store - if that doesn't work, you might consider some of the grease removing hand cleaners that mechanics use. I'd watch out with these, though, as some contain abrasives that might make your glasses even harder to see through.

I also have good luck with chamois. I have a big piece that came in a car-wash kit a few years ago, and every now and again, I just cut off a little piece that I can carry around in my glasses case. You should be able to find this for cheap at the fabric store.

What kind of soap are you using?

If it's that bad, try using Dawn.

Oil needs something to dissolve it. Here's a scratch-free way.
Liquid dish detergent like Dawn is excellent for doing that.
Pour it straight onto the glasses, use your finger to spread the detergent across the full lenses, then hold under the faucet rinsing with water until all the bubbles are gone.

Get glasses cleaner or even just regular Windex. I put those on my glasses when all else fails.

Make sure you don't touch them too much cause that leaves oil like crazy.

You can buy wipes in these little pouches kind of like the wet wipes you get if you buy buffalo wings. I believe they are called lens cloths. They work really well. I've heard you can just simply clean them with soap and water too, but I've never actually done it. Those wipes are amazing though.

The soap you are using must have oil or fats in it for softening your skin - that's your problem

Here are the instructions provided by a company that is the leading wholesaler of plastic lenses for eyeglasses.

"Soap and warm water are best for cleaning lenses. Avoid using Windex?, ammonia-based cleaners, acetone, aerosol-based cleaners or caustic solutions as they may damage the coating. Also avoid ultrasonic cleaners. Do not
