Extremely blurry vision with new glasses?!

Question: I recently went to the eye doctor because I had been having trouble seeing far away. I had went to get an eye exam almost 2 years before this, and did end up getting glasses, I believe that the prescription was around a -2 at that time. So when I went to the doctor this time around I got my eye test done, and bought brand new glasses and everything apparently my eyesight had almost doubled and became a -3.75 now. So I just got my glasses today, and when I first put them on it was extremely blurry, I mean like even worse than I see without my glasses on period. I would probably say it is at least twice as bad as my actual vision without glasses on at all. When I told them this, I was told it was because it was such a big change in prescription that my eyes just had to adjust. I have been trying to deal with this, but I am getting headaches from keeping them on. Is this normal? are my eyes just adjusting? It is so bad that I cannot even see the text on the computer screen...

If your prescription went from -2.00 to -3.75 that is a decent change. You should however, notice that things are much clearer, but may feel a little strange for awhile. Hold them about arms length away at an object. The object should look much smaller in the glasses than it actually is. If it looks bigger then they may have made your glasses wrong. all it takes is for someone to write the wrong sign + instead of - . Take them back to the prescribing Doctor to make sure the place you got them made them correctly. If they are correct ask if they can recheck your eyes if you have been wearing them for atleast a week.

I would get a second opinion..my eyes changed a lot in 2 years and my new glasses didnt bother me at all..You should be able to see better not worse.

The first thing you should do is to take the glasses to another place that makes glasses and ask them to verify that the prescription in the lenses is actually the one called for in your written prescription. (You can ask the place that made the lenses to give you a copy of the prescription). Sometimes the lenses are not made correctly.

That isn't normal at all.

It may take a few hours to get used to a change, but it should be clear at least.

Go back and ask them to re-check the glasses to ensure they were made right, then if they are , the Dr. should re-examine you...free

I would think that once you explain the problem, they will know something is wrong.

A 2 diopter Rx change is not that unusual depending on your age. It is not that unlikely that a change in the amount of astigmatism in your prescription will cause you to see the world as though it is tilting. Also, patients often report that it is difficult to get used to the way the world looks because of the size of everything through the glasses which can affect the way that you feel as you move around in space. Usually it takes about a good week of really wearing the glasses to see if this is an adjustment that you can make or whether the prescription needs to be altered in some way. As for what other people experience it doesn't mean anything. You would be surprised how many people out there can only see 20/80 or worse (things have to be four times as big for them to see) without their glasses, but insist that they see just fine!
