Anyone have good or bad things to say about laser eye surgery?!

Question: and how does it work ? Is it really safe and permanent?

how much does it cost in your area?

Thanks for your answers!

I am going to reverse the trend of the other answers.
I had it done in 2003. Until I had it done, I used to wear glasses at about -6 (that's moderate short sighted) and hated it.

The procedure was quick and painless. I was awake for the whole thing, and they did one eye right after the other. For each eye, they fitted a device to stop me from blinking, removed the outer surface of the eye (very thin layer), applied the laser, then replaced the outer surface again. After treatment I had to wear protective clear covers on my eyes for 24 hours.

Since then, my sight's been almost perfect. You might have read about a halo effect at night - I do get that, but it's pretty mild. Not enough to bother me. I can still drive safely. But during the day, my vision is completely clear.

I certainly didn't regret it, and still don't. My wife had it done last year in the same place and she's happy too.

you have to stay awake and still while its happening, so yes you will see the lazor going into your eyeball, literally. And your eyelids are pushed back so you dont flinch and burn off your eyelid.

Its not 100% guarenteed so you could go blind from it and no amount of compensation will buy you more eyes, blinded for life is not a good thing.

But if it works, it works well, my friend had it done and was very happy.

They do not do it for certain eye disorders like if you have an astigmatism thats too strong, it wont be able to be fixed.

J's answer is fascinating and the bit she said about blinding has convinced me not to get it.

I don't know how true this is, but I have been told that driving at night is not an option after laser eye surgery, as you get a "halo" effect around lights afterward.

Well, I know that you shouldn't get it.
My mom had it done a few years ago &&. it ****** up her eyesight because she has to wear certain glasses to drive at night &&. a different pair to read things.
&&. she's got perscribed sunglasses.
So, it's a waste of time &&. money, mostly.
But, now she's got contacts so she's all good now.
But, my suggestion is to not get it.
Specially what J said about it making you go blind or that it can make you blind.
Yea, that's a big red flag right there to not get it.
