Eye specialists, ocular migraine?!

Question: I experienced a shimmering flash of white lights in my eyes and lasted abount 10 min, went away and came back again and was hard to focus. No headache,no pain in my eye.

Scared me and went to the eye doctor who adv it was an ocular migraine. By the time she examined me, it had gone away. Do they diagnois this by just looking into my eyes or by the description I gave them?

Just by description, and by checking that there are no signs of any other conditions that might produce similar symptoms...
A retinal tear, for example, or transient ischaemia, but almost all other conditions would leave a permanent sign or have more associated symptoms.

There's no definitive test for migraine, and it's not in the eye at all: it's the brain producing visual symptoms.
(some people also get false smells!)

I've had these for years and never knew what they were called! Thanks. Also, I sometimes experience a full blown migraine after one of these episodes...like a warning sign! My eye doctor always checks my eyes and just tells me that unless it doesn't go away, not to worry about it!
