As someone has mentioned, don't forget to factor in the costs of solutions and drops--I didn't and have been surprised at how fast they can go and the extra money. The lowest prices for solutions and drops and cases are at Target/WalMart and Costco.

Also, if you buy contacts online, rather than at your doctors office, you can save a bundle of cash--they are usually cheaper than half as much!

Lastly, the prices of glasses varies so much, it really depends. I know people that spend $600 on single vision eyeglasses with fancy designer frames, when they could shop around and get the same lenses in similar cheaper frames for $200. Or they could order them online through the new cheaper eyeglass makers out of the country for as little as $20. So it really does vary...

I really think that if you buy your contacts online, get a cheap source for solutions and drops, that you could have contacts for a yearly rate very similar to moderately high priced eyeglasses such as most shops will sell you (Around $250-$300). So this would be almost truthful to your folks.

Of course not! Also, I wouldn't advise you to wear monthly lenses. The bi-monthly or daily lenses are more hygienic.

It depends on what kind of glasses you would normally get. Monthy disposable contacts can run about $160 (give or take, depending on what type of lenses they are and what type you need) for a year supply. So if you generally spend more than that on glasses, then yes, they would be cheaper. Keep in mind though that even if you wear contact lenses you do need to also have a pair of glasses for back-up and emergencies in case you were to get an infection, which is a very real possibility with wearing any contacts. Plus, even when you wear contacts full-time, you should always take one or two days a month when you give your eyes a break and wear your glasses.

Not true. Glasses are about 50% cheaper than lenses.

Thing is though with contacts , there is also the on going expense of cleaning solution and rewetting drops.

You can figure probably close to another 75 - 100.00 a year for that.

But the contacts and associated expenses are spread out over the year, so it doesn't hurt as much as a one time bigger expense for glasses.

But as Mrs.SSG said, you will need glasses also...you can't just wear contacts all the time.
