IMPORTANT! Contact Lens wearers, have you heard about this?!

Question: Have you heard about the fungal infection that is striking wearers of contacts lenses? It is a fairly new discovery but is very dangerous and becoming more common.

I was at my optometrist today and he very sternly warned me about this. Apparently they are not entirely sure where the fungus is coming from, but public bathing places and tap water is suspicious. As of yet there is no cure and the infections could progress to total or partial blindness, or loss of your eyes.

Ways to prevent this are to wipe off your hands of all water after washing your hands when your about to take out your contacts. Use saline solution and saline solution only to rinse and store your contacts, and briefly boil your contact case periodically. When swimming or showering, either don't wear contacts, or keep any water out of your eyes.

This is a very scary thing to hear about, and I wanted to see who else has heard about this and get the word out there!

I visited my optometrist last week for a check up and did not hear a mention of any new kind of infection. It is generally good practice to do all the things you mentioned about preventing infection of this new fungi. All that said i am no optometrist...

I've never heard of that.
I need to hurry up and become of age to get lasik. = |

Haven't heard anything about that.

But one phrase there is wrong. About using saline solution only to rinse and store your lenses.

Storing your lenses in saline solution doesn't clean them, nor does it disinfect them.

Saline is just for rinsing. It has no disinfecting qualities.
