Question about toric contact prescription...?!

Question: I had my first contact exam last week (been wearing glasses for almost 20 years) and was told that I would have to have toric lenses because of my astigmatism.

My prescription is:
Power/ Cyl / Axis/ Diam. / B.C./
OD +0.50/ -.75 / 170 / 14.5 / 8.5
OS +0.75/ -.75 / 180/ 14.5 / 8.5

I've been told by several people that since the astigmatism is very slight that I should still be able to wear regular contacts. Is there any truth to this? I really wanted to be able to wear colored lenses but can't afford almost $300 for a 6 month supply (versus $70 for the clear). Apparently toric lenses can get pretty expensive. I don't want to risk harming my eyes, but I don't want to get ripped off either.

Regular contacts won't give you a very good vision for sure.

Your astigmatism is equal to the sphere power, and even greater in the right eye. Your astigmatism part of this correction is the only part you need, so if that isn't corrected, it is of no use at all to wear contacts.

And it is minor enough that you can get along fine without wearing that all the time.

But the main thing about an Rx like this, is that you don't need contacts at all.

Stick to glasses, an Rx like that is only for occaissional wear anyway.

If you really want color lenses, get them with no Rx in them. Then just put your glasses over them when you feel you need them for certain things.

Your astigmatism is borderline, ask your dr to let you try non toric contacts first (witha free trial pair). If you don't like the vision go to a toric.
