Do optical shops always fix eyeglasses for free?!

Question: I had pads on my eye glasses fall out after ski goggle removal. The optical shop took 5 minutes and put new pads in, cleaned my glasses, and gave them back to me. They said I didn't owe them anything. I feel absurdly greatful (not enough however to buy glasses from them - I get mine over the internet). Should I have offered a tip? What's the etiquette of such transactions? Thanks!

I do not think a tip was necessary. Just let them know how much you appreciate it. This is a fairly common "Good Will Gesture" by optical shops. Most of the time, they do not know that you are not there customer. Also, helping others with minor adjustments like that is a way to get new customers.

Normally you have to be a tried and true customer, I say send them flowers or send a thank you note.

Most optical shops do this, as a way to try and get new customers. I would just be greatful that they fixed it, and not think too more about it. You could send a thank you note.

Where I work do free minor repairs free of charge to encourage people to come and buy specs from them. If you buy online you should accept that you don't get the aftercare service you get from an opticians store, internet stores have far lower over-heads and don't offer any post-sales service, that's why they are cheaper. You should have tipped or offered a donation to an in-store charity box.

yeah most of them do

Maybe a donation to any charity box they happen to have; that's what I did when a shop did me a similar favor and didn't charge for it.

The etiquette is that you should order your next pair of glasses from them instead of over the internet.
