Tell me all you know about glasses please!?!

Question: I have an interview for a job on saturdays in an opticians doing administration. Which I have loads of experience in but the job is also telling people which glasses suit them, which i think is common sense. But I dont wear glasses so I dont know what rims or anything are, so can you tell me all I need to know please! Thanks

You'd do better with researching this subject online through Google or something like that. I couldn't possibly tell you everything I know about about glasses. I couldn't possibly type everything that I've learned in 11 years of being an optician. And besides, if its an administrattrative position, how much of the job will deal directly with optics and glasses and contact lenses? I seriously doubt they are going to quiz you on optics. If its administration, they will probably be more concerned with what you know in that area.

Its not all about what frame styles are popular; its mostly about what frames work with which prescriptions, what lenses work with what prescriptions, what lens options and treatments are available and when to recommend them, troubleshooting when a patient is having problems, using equiptment like a lensometer and a pupilometer, learning to measure for bifocals and progressive lenses, dealing with insurances and explaining benefits and coverage to the patient, frame adjustments and repairs, and then there is dealing with contact lenses and showing people how to put them in and take them out and how to clean and care for them. Its also about interacting with the Optometrist and interpreting the prescription and knowing when to refer back to the doctor for questions and issues regarding the patient. So, its not ONLY about what frames are in style right now. Opticians do a LOT more than just help you pick out frames that look nice; we help you select frames and lenses based on your prescription and lifestyle and its not something that can be explained here in one or two paragraphs.

At the moment rectangle bold frames are definatly whats hot!
In my opinion when someone has a normal oval face, average looking they can get away with any frame..
When people have round faces = go for a longer frame at the sides as you want to make the face seem slimer..
sqaure face = dont get sqaure galsses!!! lol...your clients will more than likey have an idea what tey want I mean I think it will be a natural instinct for you... Good luck!

You have to consider the shape of the customer's face, and the type of lenses that the customer needs. Elliptical shape frames suit most. The rest is common sense. Don't put small frames on a person with a big round face, don't recommend frame-less specs for a very high Rx. Don't worry, a good opticians should be willing to train you in these aspects. Good luck in your interview and show willingness to learn. Push your customer service skills and all should go well.
