I have a pair of Transitions lenses (with an anti-reflective coating on them) and I have the same gripe as just about everyone else...the fact that they don't change in the car is a real down-side. Many people want them because it gets rid of the hassle of carrying around 2 pairs of glasses, but in reality, you still need a good pair of dark shades for driving. So I keep my good sunglasses with me at all times, even though I have the Transitions. If I wanted them for just being outdoors, they would be great...but I'm not an "outdoorsie' kind of gal. I want them for driving and they really don't work for that purpose.

As far as cost...it really does depend on where you go. They can run anywhere between probably $80 and $200 for a pair of lenses and then add the cost of your frame on top of that. Keep your eyes opened for sales and promo's.

Those lenses that get darker when you go outside and lighten when indoors are much more expensive then clear lenses. The one drawback to them is that they dont always change while in the car. UV rays activate the lens and make it darken and most car windshields block UV.
The last time I priced those kind of lenses they were almost 200 bucks and that was not including the frame...but it does depend on where you go...sometimes you can find a good sale.

They are great for people who love the out doors they work great when out on a sunny or even a cloudy day. The down side to them is they do not work at all in your car, as your car has UV protection in the windshield/windows and the UV rays are what make the transitions change color. The other down side i have found is it takes to long for them to change back into clear lenses when i enter a building, i actually end up putting my glasses on my head and when they get to the clear color then i put them back on. It normally takes about 1 min, which may not seem long but when your in a food store trying to look at products it seems like forever.

~~~ In the office i work at they are 85 Dollars for the set of lenses with out insurance~~
I don't know about USA, in new zealand about nz$600, and you can get toughened lenses that will last a long time, I'd never be without them, they're great.
I've had them a couple of times. One weird thing was that they glowed under black light. This made it harder to see in nightclubs and raves.
You could try ordering some online; they might not cost you much more than $50, complete.
