From what I was told, it's a genetically inherited condition called a kyphosis, and basically it's kind of a weak spot in the spine where it can't hold itself upright and straight, particularly if the person has bad posture. I have a kyphosis, and while you can't see it, it's very, very painful, it burns all the time. My back is constantly out of whack because of it. The doctor told me the only way to fix it is to insert a steel rod through the length of my spine.

A hunched back appearance can also be from osteoporosis or scoliosis.
