As far as I know the part of the brain that perceives images is at the back of our heads. The curious thing about it is that it doesn't matter for the brain if our eyes are open or if we're imagining things since the brain reacts in exactly the same way so are we dreaming when awake too? I don't know
Perceive images as negatives? It would have to act very quickly to transform those images into decodified pieces to interpret. I have no idea.
