I am losing the ability to see objects closely. What is this called?!

Question: Hi,

I am 39 years old. I have had perfect vision and have never worn glasses or contacts.

In the last few years I have noticed that its hard for me to focus on objects close to my eyes. I recall being able to see objects less than 6 inches away without straining my eyes.

But now I can't focus on objects less than 12 inches away. What is this condition called? Will this get a lot worse? What can I do to stop the progression of this deterioration? Or is this inevitable as I grow older?

I can see things clearly beyond 12 inches without any problems. I have excellent vision and can read small road signs, distant signs and small text far away from my eyes.

Welcome to the club !

That is presbyopia , and is completely normal as the lens of the eye loses it's elasticity , and it becomes harder for it to change it's thickness in order to focus up close.

Nothing can be done about it , it is just the natural aging process.

You will learn to love your reading glasses....lol

I believe you would be consider "farsighted". Go see an ophthalmologist.

this happens to everyone when they get older. you probably just need some reading glasses.

Far sightness. Or commonly know as old age eye problem. Do get a eye check and get a spect to correct it. there are nothing to be worried about.

farsightedness is not the right term. young people can be far-sighted but still see well.

this is called presblyopia. your age (close to 40) is usually the age of onset for this. it is a normal aging change and everyone is bound to have it. you can go visit an optician or optometrist to have your eyes checked and make a pair of reading glasses/progressives/bifocals.
