I have floaters in my vision...will this cause me any problems in the future?!

Question: I have had them as far back as I can remember and they haven't really caused me any real problems besides being annoying

Hello. Floaters with a sudden onset are ones you have to watch out for. You have something called vitreous in the back of your eyes and it's a jelly-like substance in the retina. When you get floaters, it's the actual vitreous that is sloughing off. In some people, vitreous substance sloughs off either easier or more often than others. It is nothing to worry about unless the floaters remain, your vision is affected, and/or the floaters are accompanied with flashes of light. Otherwise this is normal especially as you age, the vitreous tends to thin and therefore slough off easier. Think of it akin to skin cells sloughing off. When you would need laser (as in diabetic) is when you have abnormal blood vessels that are leaking blood or fluid (in that case the hot laser would cauterize those hemorrhages) but if your floaters come and then leave again, it is not blood or blood vessels but like I said-your vitreous. You should however get regular check-ups with an eye doctor yearly whether or not you have floaters! Hope that helped clear things up. No pun intended.

no its not bad at all it just means you have clogs of gooey stuff stuck behind your eyes i read it in a book for science and its not bad

I used to get loads of those when I was younger and it never impaired my vision. Its just a bit 'wierd' but totally harmless.

Floaters are nothing to take lightly. They can mean you are Diabetic, or the pressure in your eye maybe to high. After time they will dissolve but you should have it checked out.
They can burn the blood vessels that are leaking with a laser. I have had it done many times.

Its just blood vessels floating on your eyeball - if there are alot of them its a problem - if not you should be okay.

If you are ever concerned go see an optometrist because its not worth the risk.

I have to admit when you said floaters I thought something else....

Floaters are serious if they have developed suddenly or increased significantly. Having them as long as you have is not good either. Everyone has floaters from the time we are born. Our eyes and brains simply adjust to them so we don't notice them. Suddenly seeing significant numbers of floaters means that something has drastically changed within your eye or even your brain such as a mini-stroke. That is why you should see a doctor.

I naturally browsed thru all your answers so far, & took particular interest in "Soon To Be Mrs. W"'s response. Being she's a registered nurse, working in the eye surgery field, I'm certain she's pointing you in the right direction.
I too first noticed floaters .. bright, white or silver, round, to half-moon shapes in both eyes, back in 1980. Especially as I went from a light room into a dark one, or vice-versa. And although I was alarmed at first, I eventually just shrugged it off. Wish Mrs. W had been around back then.
What I should have done, however, was go see an eye doctor. And by the time I finally did ... some 4 years later, I was diagnosed with "Retinitis Pigmentosa", a degenerative eye disease that involves the steady deterioration of the retina, and causing severe tunnel vision.
In 2000, I went on total blind disability, and can no longer drive. I'm able to respond to your question only because I had my left lens replaced 2 years ago, giving me maybe another year or 2 of sight. After that, it's "lights out". The right eye went out on me a couple of years ago.
GO GET AN EYE EXAM ! ...and mention the floaters in detail. Also, make sure the "peripheral vision" test is a part of your exam.
