Corrective Eye Surgery?!

Question: At birth, something went wrong and now i have a lazy eye. the muscles are messed up so it makes the right eye turn to the right. I was wondering if I should get the surgery and what will happen when i get it done. I asked my friend Jesse if I should get it done, but he didn't really help. I asked a couple of other friends and they said sure. Please help. Thanks

Amblyopia is the technical term for a 'lazy eye' or very poor vision as you describe. Strabismus is the technical term for an eye turned in or out.

Honestly, the surgery is not complicated, and I have seen it done on several children. They either shorten or elongate the muscle during surgery. It all depends on what degree your eye turn is. It is not perfect, but you will generally have an overall appearance of 'straightness.' In different positions of gaze, your eye may appear turned out still. There is a lot of bruising in and around the eye after the surgery. Normally, the surgery lasts 'forever,' but some people need to have a retreatment later in life especially when our muscles atrophy a little. Mind you, the surgery is purely cosmetic. It will not restore the vision.

Do it only if you have to, if anything goes wrong you could go blind.

There are lots of good surgeons out there for "lazy eye" or strabismus.
All surgeries have risks, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have them done.

My suggestion is to go see a opthamologist (not an optometrist) and ask him about it. this is your best bet to find out all the questions you want to know!!!
FYI-
Too choose where to go look for a doctor who is in a big group of doctors- this shows that the doctors he works with respect his work ( usually when a doctor is in a group and his peers don't respect his work they vote him out of the practice, because bad doctors can create lawsuits to the company) and look for a doctor who has been practicing AND doing surgery for around 15-25 years-that way you know he has experience. If possible, go to a practice that is completely focused around curing eye disease and corective eye sugery. Ask questions!!!!!! Ask! Ask! Ask! Ask the nurses for a name-they will not tell you bad doctors names. Don't ask if a doctor is good or bad-they could get fired if they said someone is bad- so learn to ask open-ended questions like: Can you give me names of some opthamologists?

Bottom line: it doesn't hurt to go to the DR. and get checked out, Ask questions and talk about it!!!!
Don't ask your friends-they don't know what a DR. does while he is in surgery, they can only tell you before and after, if anything.
