Many of the people answering are getting a little too excited.

It sounds like you are still in the fitting process, you have gone through three different sets that didn't give the best vision, and you and your doctor are trying to get contacts that work for you.

The office gave you expired trials. This is not a disaster. A mistake, an error in patient relations, yes. Contact lenses do not suddenly explode or go bad when the expiration date is reached. They are plastic discs sealed in saline solution.

They probably did this to save them, and you, time. They noticed that the trials were expired. Ordering new trials would take a day or two. They gave you the expired ones. If they were really trying to hide something, they would have taken them out of the container and put them into a contact lens case with no markings.

Call them, explain that the expiration makes you nervous, and have them order you new ones.

Report him to the licensing agency? Okay, right.

call the doctor's office and tell them that the contacts are unacceptable due to the date, and you would like to go and pick up a different box.

first off, contact another eye doctor and ask him if this is ok. second, call the BBB in your area and report this. third, do not go back to this doctor. gosh, he could have at least told you they were expired (if it is ok to wear them anyway) and given you a discount. your eyes are nothing to take chances with.

That's dishonest of your doctor to do that. I would report the doctor to the state agency that licenses him/her.

I agree that your doctor should not have given you a pair that has already been expired without letting you know. Actually, it may not be all that bad. I have been wearing contacts in my left eye since January (sample pair) and the right eye since February (regular, no sample) (they made a mistake on the number for my right eye so I had to wait another month) and my doctor told me that I can wear them up to 2 months since my eyes are very healthy although it is recommended to change them every 6-8 weeks. So it may still be wearable. You can even call Lens Crafters for example and just ask if it is okay to wear them if they have expired. If they say no, call your doctor and tell him that you would like a brand new pair.

This happens all time. Doctors have hundreds and hundreds of sample contacts laying around. They don't go through them weeding out the expired ones everyday. Hopefully they do every now and then, but some will slip through the cracks. It's really not that big of deal.

don't fret - the sharpy marking wasn't intentionally put there to hid the expiration date - probably only to distiguish right eye from left eye. unfortunately, expirations happen and occasionally the techs miss it - the contact is still ok if it's only a month out- call your doc if you are concerned and let him know you'd like a new trial - good luck with your contact lens fit
