My optometrist will disable my ability to focus tomorow, what can I expect?!

Question: The test is needed because I am focusing too much during basic vision tests. Anyway, he said I will have blurred near sighted vision for 12 to 24 hours. How long does it really last and could a person drive after the dialation?

It isn't a simple question actually. Most of the time patients who are checked for health are dilated with Mydracil (tropicamide). But sometimes when you are dilated to relax the focus in your eye (especially if you are teenage or younger) they may be inclined to use cylcoplegia which lasts much longer. It can actually effect you distance vision if you don't have an accurate distant prescription. If you are always focusing during your eye tests and your glasses are based on that, when you lose that focus distance can be blurry too. It is always best to have someone with you if you are unsure whether you will feel safe driving.

I have driven after the dilation before, I mainly just had a hard time focusing in on the little things. It's a very weird feeling, tho...

Your distance vision should be fine...but MAKE SURE you have some good sunglasses to wear when you go back outside after the exam, or you won't see a thing because everything will be so bright.

It will usually affect your near vision for about 3-4 hours. If you wear contacts, ask your doctor when it will be okay to put them back in. Usually you can wear them again after about 6 hours or so. If your eyes are still dilated after 24 hours, I would call and make an appt. to see your doc again. Most dilations only last a few hours, but I think it depends on the type of drops used. And yes, you will be fine to drive, just make sure either you have a good pair of sunglasses, or the doctor gives you something to wear outside in the sunlight.
