What it wrong with my eyes?! Do I need glasses?!?!

Question: Ok, well I'm in the seventh grade and a few weeks ago we had health screening (required) where they check you vision, hearing, and spine. On my vision I got 25 on my right eye and 40 on my left. I'm confused though. If I look (with my left eye only, the right one covered) at very, very small letters that are like a foot away, I can still see it, but if I look at large numbers far away I can't see it clearly, but I can with my right eye... Do I need glasses? Or is this just some type of istigmatism? My mom has a slight case of istigmatism so maybw it's genetics...? Also, if I do need to wear glasses/contacts, will they help my eye, like make them stronger? Because my friend had to wear glasses in the fifth grade and now her vision is fine... Help?

I have astigmatism in both my eyes and that definitely sounds like what you have. Astigmatism usually can't be corrected with out surgery.

Sounds like "lazy eye". Usually can be corrected with lenses or patches. But if you even have to ask if you need glasses, most likely the answer is YES! However, your best bet is to ask your mom to take you to the eye doctor and they will give you proper advice.

Just to add a bit for your question about lazy eye... When an eye is partially closed or droopy, it can definitely be a sign of lazy eye, however - there are other symptoms that can fall under that category - and yours really wouldn't be anything to worry about.
Last year, the same kind of thing happened to my younger brother... one eye was better at seeing longer distance and blurred when close... the other was great at seeing detail up close but was blurry at a distance... basically what they told him was that over time each eye had changed because the body naturally uses the strongest muscles for the task at hand. So, his one eye was just slightly better at seeing detail over distance... over time his body relied more on that one eye instead of trying to use both. So to fix it, he had to do eye excercises at night and it did take about 6 months for his eyes to correct themselves, but he did it - and now both eyes work equally well and he doesn't need glasses or anything!
That was why I said it sounded like lazy eye, I was not trying to offend!

You are probably shortsighted in your left eye and perhaps a little in the right also, although it could be due to astigmatism instead. Either way it could be corrected with glasses, although you may not need to since your right eye is pretty good. It will depend a bit on whether you find it bothers you - do you have trouble reading the board or get headaches or eyestrain? If not you probably won't need glasses yet.

Shortsightedness usually gets worse over time rather than better, but it's not the end of the world to need glasses - lots of people have them!
