Contacts? Help!?!
Question: although i'm 14, my mother says i'm still too young for contacts. I hate my glasses, and my eyes are like really pretty(what everyone says) so i hate hiding behind glasses. I finally convinced my mom it'd be okay, but i have to pay for the difference in price.
I spend about $250 a year on glasses.
i have an astigmatism, but its really low(-.5 about.) I read that people like me ma not need contacts made for astigmatism if they use rgp's because they curve ur eye enough for u to focus. Is this true?
how much would i have to pa for contacts a year

Shandi is right your astigmatism is too low to worry about. Even though acuvue oasis is really comfortable sometimes these kind of soft lenses don't give you the desirable vision you may want.
I can't tell you whether rgp's are better or not for you. You have to adjust to them for at least a couple of weeks vs a couple of days with soft contacts. Most people find more long term comfort with soft contacts although most people who try rgp say it is pretty comfortable and in some cases more comfortable. Vision is usually sharper with rgp especially if you have astigmatism or HOA's (causes bad night vision). RGP's also allow more oxygen in your eyes which makes them healthier and prevents infections although there are some new extended wear soft contacts are getting closer to RGP's oxygen allowance. Of course the safety of using extended wear soft contacts overnight is significantly reduced because of the oxygen that the eye needs. RGP's also are usually cheaper since they usually last about 2 years. I see them priced around $50-100 for each eye. Soft ones probably cost around 200 dollars total per year or more if you get disposables. So as long as you don't lose an RGP they are usually quite a bit cheaper. You still have to take into consideration the case and solution for each type also
I'm planning on getting contacts in a few days! I'm definitely going for RGP's but I would not sway you to believe they are they best for everybody. Some people complain about a little more inconvience on the cleaning (which isn't bad but you have to scrub), initial discomfort and more irritation if something gets in your eyes. Plus some people don't get used to them as well as soft ones. But Personally I would encourage tryng RGP as I hear how they give you the sharpest vision especially if you astigmatism or see glare, halos at night. But its up to you and your doctor to see what works best for you!
If your astigmatism is that low, you won't need contacts for astigmatism. Acuvue Oasys is a very good option. It is a very comfortable lens and alows a lot of oxygen to pass through to your eyes. I know that you can get them at Walmart for $35 a box. 4-6 boxes will give you a year's supply.
