What age good for contact lenses?!

Question: what age for getting contacts?
I wear contacts so I know how to care for them. I have 4 boys and two of them wear glasses. One is 13 and one is turning 11 next month. My 11 yr old has expressed an interest in getting contacts. He is practically blind without his glasses. He can't even see the big E on the chart without them.

Glasses for him are expensive because he is so blind we have to get him two pairs so he will have a backup if one breaks. He just got new glasses recently and they were $500 each! He had to go up to an adult frame so we were not able to use the same frame. We had thought about contacts but went with the glasses again. I am thinking next time we go which won't be until next Jan. (he will be 11 almost 12 then) I might go with contacts for him. I thought about not waiting until then but not sure since we just spent the money on glasses.

is there a good age for kids to get contacts or is it more about maturity? He is very mature and responsible for his age, otherwise I wouldn't consider it.

You are right , it is about maturity.

If you are willing to spend the time to make sure he follows the important rules of hygiene , and that he doesn't overwear them, then he is probably a good candidate for them.

But of course, he will still have to have backup glasses.

Children/early teens shouldn't be wearing contacts anywhere near as long as adults can.

Like everyone, but even more with youngsters, they should be removed at least an hour or more before going to sleep.

The Dr. will probably tell you to limit his wearing to no more than 8 or 9 hours a day, and maybe not for 7 days a week either.

So there should be a few hours every day that his glasses are still needed in order to not start over wearing the contacts.

You also really need to shop around for better prices on glasses...500.00 per pair is ridiculous, no matter what options he has. They are still single vision lenses.

Good luck

i got contacts at 11, and they were fine. It was really easy. As long as your son is responsible and remembers to put them in and take them out, its fine. Someone at your eye doctor will help him try and put them in the first time. they don't hurt at all, as long as his hands are clean. Its a lot easier to do more things with contacts, and you cant feel them at all!

If your son is responsible then i think he should definitely get them!

If they can take care of it . For all details, information and remedies about contacts check out http://use-contactlens.blogspot.com/

I was 15, almost 16, when I got contacts. Of course, I'm 33 now so a lot has changed! I could have had them a couple years earlier - I'd been asking for them for a long time, and I think I would have been responsible enough to have them.

I would just be sure to educate him well about the danger of not taking care of contacts well - disease, eye injury, permanent issues. You may consider disposables to help with the issue, but of course he has to change them when he's supposed to, or there's no point.

It's so much easier to clean and care for contacts than when I got them - one step solutions nowadays, whereas I had five different products I had to use! I would say try it, why not. Again, just be sure he is well-educated on care, what to do if he needs to take it out at school, etc.

you are best to wait untill the kids have reached about 13-14 (i.e puberty) this is because their eyes grow like any other part of the body. And by putting a foreign object (lens) into the eye the probability for things to go wrong is alot higher. Also the routine of putting in and taking out contact lenses can be quite fustrating and can lead to eye inflamation and an occasional itch.

I think contacts are great. You can see 20X's better with contacts than with glasses. Everything is a lot clearer and once you get used to them, you can't even tell they are in your eyes! And yes I do believe its more about maturity just because you have to make sure to clean them, and put them in new solution every time you take them out of your eyes. Also you have to watch about getting eye infections and pink eye by always washing your hands before you touch your contacts! So they are a responsibility. Contacts are so much cheaper too. My year supply of contacts cost me around $80. But if you go ahead and get the contacts, then he will have both, just in case, which is always great to have a back up plan in case you ever have problems from your contacts or your eye. I highly recommend you get him contacts. At first it might be hard for him to get them in, but when he gets used to them it'll take only a couple seconds!

I got my contacts when I was 17 and a few months before 18.

My mom wouldn't get them for me before then because she said that contact lenses might obstruct the 'growth of my eyes'...I'm not sure if that's true...I'd do some research about that before getting contact lenses for your son...

I would say when they enter high school would be a good time.

no age is specific for these contacts, your idea of changing to contacts from spectacle lens requires more of personal tutoring often otherwise it a matter of normals for others, also more warring to be engaged in the mind of young of the damage likely to occure on injury--this age is an experimental issue still it is not good for this small age to be installed with potentially dangerous one in whom the far point is close to the eyes l
