Can insurance cover the cost of contacts and contacts eye exams?!

Question: I think im on the "MY KIDS" insurance program. Im still 16, I havent had an eye exam in 5 years!

I dont even wear my glasses nomore because I feel nerdy. I can see without them and it doesnt bother me, like giving me a headache. But like I cant see far away. Like I can see up close but not far away. I can still watch tv and stuff, but stuff like in classrooms I probably couldnt see the board lol.

How much will it cost? Are all contacts disposable? Are there any contacts that you can wear for years? lol

Insurance NEVER covers contacts unless its an extra vision insurance to go along with health insurance. Cost just depends on the doctor and most contacts are disposable cause now there are more affordable to make and are healthier for your eyes. I would never try to get contacts that last for years that's more of a chance for some serious eye infections.

if insurance is through the government only selected glasses are covered with eye exam. as for contacts eye exam and contacts are not covered. i pay $200 for eye exam and full yr of contacts (disposables as the extended wear is rare anymore) for my daughter that has medicaid through the gov. hope i helped.

Some insurance plans will completely cover the cost of the exam and a year of contacts; other plans may only partially cover your costs.

Most contact wearers nowadays do use the soft contact lenses; they are a lot more comfortable than the hard rigid gas permeable lenses. There are some soft contacts that are made to wear for one year, but they are a lot more expensive than the normal daily, bi-weekly, or monthly disposables. The yearly wear ones also require a little more care than normal disposables. Along with your regular contact solution, you would also need a protein remover with the yearly wear lenses. With disposables, most people only need the normal contact solutions.

The prices on contacts vary...if you go with dailies, they could be as little as $10 per box...then it goes up from there, according to brand, length of time they can be used for, etc...contact prices can go up into the $100s.

If price is a concern, and you aren't sure how much your insurance will cover, just tell the eye doctor what price range you'd like to try to stay within per box of contacts. You could also call your insurance company, and see how much they cover on vision exams and contacts, so that you will know what to expect to pay before your eye doctor appointment.
