Glasses: good, bad, or simply not a cure (just a support)?!

Question: Do glasses slow worsening the eyesight (I don't expect that they correct the vision impaired by ageing) or do they make the vision worse because of the "unnatural" (wrong?) accomodation?

I need professional opinion. (The 2 face in face opinions I got are blurry, I can't conclude what should anybody do.)

My sight is ok, by the way, this is an "academic" question.

Glasses are not a cure for either far-sighted (hyperopic) or near-sighted (Myopic) vision. They just change the vergeance of the light entering the eye so that the image can form more clearly on the retina. Though they interact with the eyes and their function, they do not make things worse or better (i.e they do not lessen the degree of myopia or hyperopia). Glasses that have the proper power for an individual, do not induce "un-natural" accommodation. I am an optometrist for 15 years now.

1st of all im a carpenter not an optomologist, bur i couldnt see 1/16th incraments on my tape,i got prescription eye glasses and now everything is clear.i was 20/20 till i turned 40,(but i still hit my finger with a hammer every now and then :D)

no glaasses just focus light , because u get glasses when there is somethin rong wit tha lens in ur eyeand it dusnt focus properly. nd the lens on ur glaases focous tha light into the rite place

This question gets asked an awful lot. Wearing eyeglasses will not make your eyes better OR worse. It is purely physiological and nothing can be done except corrective surgery if you are a candidate for it. When you need glasses, light does not come to a focus on the retina. It either falls short of it or would technically focus beyond. The lenses bend light and shorten or lengthen the focus so it hits the retina and gives you clear vision.

In the case of healthy (no degeneration or metabolic disease) eyes wearing glasses may impair sight further cause your not able to see without glasses the same way the longer you wear them the longer is the effect.

I suffer from mild myopia and astigmatismus which in my case is temporarily worsened by weariness or long term monotoneos stress. (exams, computer marathon in this case damage is done due to low frequency of eyewink and dry eye which no glasses can solve I use eyedrops).

In my case the eye muscles are further relaxed by using glasses. (eyeball is normally deformed due to gravity making horizontal axis shorter and vertical axis longer - elipsoid. The eyemuscles are trying to make it spherical.) In this case by using glasses it is like paraplegic using wheelchair and forget about rehabilitation.

I suspect I vissited corrupt state ophthalmologist. I asked her some question regarding ophtalmology and epidemiology which she couldnt answer clearly. Then she recomended me to buy glasses and were them whole day even for reading (I see clearly on short distance) and gave me 20% discount check for particular optician. Only to reveal I can buy them at a three times lower cost without disscount elsewhere. So how can I trust such a doctor I really need them? Althought when she set up final configuration it was quite a shock: such nice vibrant colors and sharp image.

I use glasses in the car cause I cant risk accident or when Im tired. So the answer is: glasses are good for those who really need them. They are not a cure and should be looked upon as a way to improve eyesight among others like healthy diet, healthy use and environment, exercise of eye muscles which are not normaly used. Also it should be considered that the brain might adapt to the signal from the eye nerve and decode it or interpret it as a signal from perfectly spherical eyeball which probably requieres rigorous training for adults in order to be useful in any case this is hindered by glasses.
