Is this normal? Please see details.?!

Question: My 5 yr old son was diagnosed with being legally blind in one eye last November. The pediatric opthamologist felt that it could be corrected and has had us patching the good eye all day/every day since my son was diagnosed. The first follow up visit showed a huge improvement. We were excited. However, this last follow up showed no signs of improvement. My son has also now been complaining about his eye "hurting" him. The doctor has scheduled a CT scan to rule out a possible brain mass causing the vision problem. Is this normal? I heard "brain mass" and panicked. I know it is to "rule out" a mass, but it's still frightening to hear as a parent. Just curious if this is a normal routine of things or if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks to all for your help.

Doctors always present the worst case scenerio, just in case. His eye may be strained from overuse, if it's the one that has not had the patch on it. If it's the one with the patch on it, it could be anything. It's hard to know exactly what a 5 year old might be saying.

Stay calm. He's "ruling" out a mass. If he thought there was a brain mass, he'd have him in the hospital right now doing a CT, not scheduling for one.

Best wishes.

His good eye might just be hurt by the radnom changes in light and dark........
You should try and change it around the same time like a schelude that would adjust his eye and not hurt him.....

Doctors use different means to exclude possible causes, hopefully your son is fine but the doctor is just doing everything to try and pin point what the problem is. I know its hard but try not to worry too much until you find out for sure whats wrong, This is the proper step to eliminate whats not the problem to diagnose the real problem.

I have no answer for you but i will be thinkig of you as you go through this. It is scary.

Hi BPD,

my niece had her "good eye" patched while the other was dialated everyday for two years to correct her problem. As the "treatment" was slow, it worked! She does still need very thick glasses and "gass perm" lenses (sis works for eye doctor, have no idea what gass perm lenses are) if she were to ever decide to wear contacts. Anyway, she would complain of pain...no test were given (not that I can remember / CT / MRI...or whatever etc...) but just wanted to say, take it slow, and be rest assured that the doctor is there to help. Good Luck with you son's eyes!
