Question about wearing contacts longer than you're supposed to?!

Question: i have soft contacts that you are supposed to change once a month.....but i'm broke and my parents won't agree on who will buy them. so basically i've been wearing the same ones for like 2 months. my question is, is this really dangerous? am i going to like infect my eyes? i'm hoping i can get new contacts within the next week or two. thanks.

Contacts are not all the same as Kelley D says...and please don't listen to her advice. She has been very very lucky not to have developed GPC or corneal ulcers. Very few people can get away with abusing their corneas like that for long.

The monthly disposables are much more durable than the 2 week disposables, but they are still engineered to give optimal health benefits to the eye for a period of 30 days wear , with a cushion of about 1 week..after that , no matter how well you clean them, the matrix of the lens is getting plugged up with calcium and protein, stopping the oxygen flow through the lens to your corneas.

After wearing them for 6 weeks, they are really starting to starve your corneas of oxygen.

Starving your corneas of oxygen can have very serious long term effects...and for some people, those effects can happen sooner rather than later.

If you are stuck with them for awhile yet, it would be safer to really reduce your wearing time to just 4 or 6 hours a day.

2 week disposables, monthly disposables, or conventional lenses ( non disposable) are all made with different materials...for a reason.

The wearing times of each type of lens isn't just a suggestion.

you better get those out and wear your glasses. it is veryyyy bad for your eyes!! im sure your eyes have been dry? that dryness is causing small divets in the eye. get them out.

my friend left them in for about 2 months, when he took them out he peeled off the outer layer of his eye (that what the Dr told him) and his vision is still messed up after about 2 years. Good Luck!

just make sure to keep them really clean. I would wear your glasses (if you have them) when possible. Basically, bacteria just builds up on the contact which could potentially cause an eye infection. You may want to contact your eye doctor and explain the situation. They may be able to give you a few of the trail pairs they have around the office to tide you over.

Most all contacts are made the same. I wear my contacts for 6+ months before I change them. The key is to take them out EVERY night and clean them. The soltuion only costs 3-8 dollars. It's worth that to be able to extend the life of your contacts. I have been wearing contacts for 20 years and have never had an eye problem or infection. If you wear contacts with hydraclear, be sure to purchase name brand solution. The generic brands can scratch them.

you could get pink eye!
not that uncommon!

Its fine. i have two week throw aways. (acuve hydro clear)
I keep them in for 1 month..

The key is take them out every night and clean them well.
make sure they have nothing on them. like build-up.

If anything (dangerous) something like pink eye maybe..
but the chances are slim. WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE TOUCHING YOUR EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats how you get it!

Also, you could cut/scratch your cornea. i did that.. hurts pretty bad. but not death.. haha be careful. i got a scratch on my corena from a tears in my lenses. just wear your glasses if you have such.. and when you get new contacts be more careful.

Good luck. hope i helped!

That is very dangerous!!!
I kept mine on 2 days longer
and my whole eyes blew up!
They each still have a scatch till this day
A little bit more toward my pupil and i would have been blind!!

Dont let this happen to you!
Either get on another pair,or wear glasses

footprintz' answer is bang on. I'm an optician as well, and contact lenses are not all the same! I see tonnes of oxygen-deprived corneas each month, and let me tell you, in a lot of cases the damage is NOT reversable.
Please talk to your doctor about either getting a trial pair to tide you over, or switch to a conventional type of contact lens (the kind that can last for up to one year). I'd also recommend having a pair of glasses to wear during the evenings, weekends and around the house.
You only get one pair of eyes, it's not worth risking your vision and ocular health.....
