20/20 vision is not perfect vision. The numbers refer to sharpness. It's a common standard though. It means you can see something clearly from 20 feet away that should be clear from 20 feet away. Yours is 17/19, so you have to be 17 feet away from something whereas a "normal" person has to be 19 feet away.

20/20 is perfect vision in both eyes. With vision, the scale goes up the worse your vision is. For instance 20/200 (which is legally blind) would mean that you had perfect vision in one eye & legally blind vision in the other. I'm not so sure what your Dr. was talking about as I know that the vision scale goes up the worse your vision is.....

That's weird or they are putting you on.... 20/20 for example is a ratio. "Your" number is the first number. That is that you can see at 20 feet away from the eye chart what most people can see at (second number) 20 feet away. Or 20/60 means that you can see at 20 feet what most people can be 60 feet away from and still see. For good vision 20/10 that is you can see at 20 feet away what most people can only see when they are 10 feet away from the eye chart So 17/19 ???? What are they moving the eye chart to 19 feet away now ??? Nahhhhh

This what the numbers really mean. The test is called a Snellen test (the test with the big E , Snellen is right on it). It tests to see how you see from 20 feet from the chart. For example, if you see 20/30, it means you see what a person standing at 30 feet sees (I know, it is kind of confusing). I am not sure how an optometrist got such a goofy number, did you ask him about it? Good luck!

You heard the doc wrong. Gypsyday doesn't know what she is talking about in her answer. She should look up the definition of legally blind. David R is technically correct. Your doc might test at 19 feet. but probably didn't go thru the trouble of calibrating his eye chart to a non-standard size to give you an acuity of 17/19 vision.
