Where can I get reliable contact lens fitting and prescription?!

Question: I live in BC. After many years of buying contact lenses from my optometrist, I've decided to try shopping around, perhaps from online. The optometrists office won't give me my contact lens prescription however, they will only fill an order with it if I buy from them. The receptionist says this is how other places do it as well. I'm not sure if she meant other optometrists or eye-wear places in general.

I hear that I shouldn't mention to where I'm getting fitted that I may buy from another seller as well. How should I go about getting this contact lens fitting and prescription??

If the laws in Canada are similar to how they are in the U.S., you are definitely entitled to a copy of your prescription from your optometrist regardless of whether or not you order contacts from their office.

However, I agree with the person above about staying away from an online distributor. I used to work at an optometry office and the online companies are very careless about filling your prescription correctly. Our doctors would often times refit their patients into newer generation contact lenses. However, on many occasions when the patient orders from the online company, the company would fill their prescription but send them the older generation contact lenses. So they would ignore the doctor's prescription altogether!

I would recommend finding an optometrist you like so that way you don't mind supporting their business. They really are not making that much money off your contact lens orders anyways.

You can go to another optometrist. They may or may not have the same policy about giving you the prescription information. In the U.S. they are required to give you the information. I do not know if that is true in Canada. You could always take a 3 or 6 month order from the optometrist and then order on the web for the rest of the year.

Stay with a licensed optometrist for the exam. You still need a professional to examine your eyes.

This is not true.I have contacts and my optometrist gives me my prescription.I would avoid buying online unless you know alot about the office you are buying from.
