Exams include checking for glaucoma. This can be done with a puff of air, or through a measurment put directly onto the eyeball. The eye would be numbed of course, and you would never feel it.
You will also be asked to read lines of letters and numbers to see just how good or bad your vision is.
All in all, it is not a bad experience. I even had my doc take a photo of the inside of my eye! He told me I would see a flash. Well, the flash was more like my whole head lit up!!
The eye exam is usually 75.00
The glasses are the expensive part with the lenses and the frames sold seperately.
Frames are anywhere from 50.00 to 150.00 on average.
Lenses will depend on quality mostly, of the plastic used, and if it has a bifocal.
I wanted the best available so I wouldn't have trouble with my glasses down the road. The lenses cost me 300.00. But, don't think you will have to pay that much.
When you get the eye exam you can pick out a few pair of frames and get some prices before you buy.
Good luck!!

Here in Rochester Minnesota, the cost is around $50.00 for the exam and the cost of the lenses and frames are separate. costs can vary between different shops so call around. most insurances don't cover eye glasses but some will cover the exam only. Call your insurance company to make sure. The eye doctor will look into your eyes with machines, and ask lots of questions. you will be given little tests like, does this seem better, or did that look better, etc. I have been wearing glasses since I was 12(I am 55) and the tests haven't changed much in all those years!

go to Americans best eye glass

If you want your insurance to cover your eye exam, you need a medical diagnosis and a referral. Call your PCP and tell them a medical reason for why you need an eye exam ie your eyes are dry or you get headaches caused by eyestrain and then it should be covered. In the eye exam, we just do a bunch of subjective tests to see what your vision is and what correction you need to make it better. We also check the ocular health and make sure you have no eye disorders. Nothing invasive...just a lot of 'better 1 or 2' and a bunch of bright lights. Hope this helped!
