What's normal for a first-time contact lens wearer?!

Question: I got fitted for my first-ever contact lenses today and I'm very excited. I know they're going to take time to get used to, but what types of problems/discomfort are normal the first time you wear contacts? Is it normal that my vision goes blurry in spots every once in a while? Is it normal that my eyes feel dry and kind of itchy?

When you first get contacts, you may experience some blurring and dryness. This is mostly because your eyes are still getting adjusted to wearing contacts. The adjustment period can take up to 2 weeks for some people, but after that you should be just fine. The things you are experiencing are completely normal, especially since this is your first day wearing them. Blurriness can also be caused by your eyes being too dry.

You can help the dryness though; just buy some eye drops that say they are safe for use while wearing contact lenses (always make sure the box/label says that somewhere). You can just put the drops in without taking your contacts out, and that will help add some extra moisture to your eyes. Most eye drops for use with contacts can be used as often as needed, and can be a real lifesaver for many people when their contacts start feeling a little bit uncomfortable.

Give yourself about two weeks to get used to the contacts. If you still feel like they are uncomfortable, call your eye doctor. He/she may want you to try a different brand/type of contacts, and/or contact solution. There are some contact solutions that actually help the contacts retain moisture while you wear them, such as Alcon's Opti-Free Replenish, and CibaVision's Aquify. I used to experience a lot of dryness with my contacts, and was using drops all the time it seemed like. I changed to the Aquify solution, and now I rarely need to use my eye drops. So there are plenty of options out there for you if you find that the contacts and/or solution you have now isn't working for you.

yes, because youre eyes are not used to them being there, thats how mine were when i first got them but mine never went out of focus so idk but itll probly go away

I started when I was eleven, everything look SO strange at first and you may get sorta Dizzy, so take them out when yousleep DO NOT SLEEP IN THEM!!! this is VERY bad for first time contact wearers, eventually you can but you should ask your eye doctor when!

ok ive had contacts for about a yr it may take some time to get them in your eye and u may start to tear up b/c it takes a while to get in but thats about it

Yes quite normal. Depending on type you have maybe you should only wear them for short periods to start off, and then wear them for abit longer each time. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to mine. Now I don't even know they are there.

i had difficulty putting mine in for the first time...it took like an hour or something...but i had no problems with it after they were in my eye...nothing went blurry, no spots...everything was fine, it was so much better than having to wear glasses...no your eyes shouldn't feel 'dirty' or 'itchy'...if they do that might mean you have an infection
helpful tips:
make sure your nails are cut short, so you dont risk jabbing ur eye with ur nails
always wash your hands before putting ur lens in or taking them out
never sleep with your contacts still in your eye
dont wear your contacts for more than 8 hours, or else they will start feeling dry/sticky
clean out ur lens case and never reuse the same solution that was already in the case

yes all of that you will feel.......i mean when i got mine thats all i felt ..but youll get use to it ...ITS WORTH IT ...cuz i hate glasses .o and NEVER EVER EVER ...put on contacts when you touched spicy food trust me!!!!neve r....lol other than that ,,yes you wil get use to them dont worry

well sometimes you can get stuff in ur contacts like hair or something that hurts anf u can wear them insid eout on accident but ull kno if u wear them inside out cuz they will hurt ALOT. yes its normal for ur vision to go blury once in a while. i think it is normal fo rthem to feel itchy and dry cuz ur eyes r getting used to them so jsut put eyue drops in if that happens.

everything of discomfort is normal. i just got contacts a couple of months ago, and omg, i had the hardest time getting them out. after a while my eyes started hurting from poking them so much but after learning a few techniques and what not, it started getting better. my eyes do go blurry sometimes, but thats usually when i wear them too long. my eyes do get dry so thats usually when i take them out, or use eye drops to hydrate them. it gets better after a while

well first of all ull may unconfortable for being ur first time and is also normal to see blurry spots when u "zoom"with ur eye but if ur see blurry when seeing normal ask your doc, now if ur eyes feel itchy and dry u should buy a eye refresher wich u could find in a pharmacy and also never never touch ur eye or put ,take ur lenses oout w/o washing ur hands,

They will get dry and irritated, where you feel like you have to rub them a lot. Gradually build up use. Start wearing them for only a couple of hours one day and maybe 5 hours the next, etc till you feel completely comfortable. You will blink a lot at first as well. But the second you put them in you will see like you have never seen before!! I have way better vision in my contacts than glasses, congrats and enjoy!

ive been wearing contacts for 9 years. Ive never had many problems with them. Keep them clean, keep your hands clean when touch them/your eye. You shouldnt have any discomfort when you get them, you shouldnt feel them at all. if so they might be the wrong size....yeah size. If there dry try these drops called "blink" and if you wear make up try asking your doctor to recommend some "deep cleaner". mine have been blurry lately so i asked about it and my doctor told me its make up on my lense he gave me this stuff called clear care. comes with a really cool container and has proxide in the solution to really clean my soft lenses

Your vision gets blurry when the contacts dry out. Rewetting drops will help;however, if you continue to have this problem, by your one week follow up, tell your doctor. Contacts are made of different materials and disperse oxygen differently. It is possible that you may need to be fit in another lens. Initially you will feel some discomfort, but extreme drying is not normal. Another option is that the solution you are using is not lubricating enough. Try Complete.
