Eye drops/practice/dilate?!

Question: whenever my eye doc would put in drops to dilate my eyes, ive always complained about it hurting, so he gave me drops to practice with but they dont dilate my eyes. that was my last appointment. my next appointment is in a few days and i was using the practice drops and i was wondering if the practice drops are gonna feel like the real ones. (i figured out why the real ones hurt, i was looking at it so they put it in my pupil insted of the corner) so idk what the real drops are supposed to feel like

The drops don't hurt because of where on the eye the drops are put. The reason they hurt is because the drops themselves slightly irritate the nerve receptors in your eye due to the chemicals in the drop and changes in ph that occur when the drops are instilled. So your saline practice drops aren't going to hurt because they mimic your natural tears. I would recommend you ask your doctor to instill a drop of anesthetic into each eye before instilling the dilating drop. By numbing you eye before the dilating drop is instilled, you won't have any pain at all due to the dilating drop. Some people notice a little bit of stinging with the anesthetic others don't have any stinging at all. But, even if the anesthetic does sting it will only last less than ten seconds.

Ask the Doctor if he/she will put the bottle of dilation drops in their pocket to bring them to body temp. Room temp drops usually sting more than if they are at body temp.
