Can glasses really make your eyes look smaller (when you're not wearing them!

Question: I've been under the impression that wearing glasses for a long period of time can actually make your eyes looks smaller. And no, I don't mean looking through the lens because it's obvious that eyes will look different without magnification. What I mean is, when you take your glasses off, will your eyes look smaller than if you hadn't been wearing glasses for a long period of time? Can glasses actually change the shape of your eyes to make them looks smaller?

Um...no. That's not true at all. The only reason a person's eyes would look different is because of the power of the lens. + powers will magnify. - powers minify. People get used to how their eyes look with their glasses on when they were them all day so when they take them off, their eyes look strange to them because they have become accostumed to how they look with the glasses on.

Lenses bend and refract light to correct for your refractive error. They do not change the physical appearance or anatomy of the eye. All they do is bend light.

I think so...I have noticed that when I look in the mirror without my glasses on..oh I have only been wearing glasses for aboit 2 weeks and I dont wear them all day...but it seems that way to me.

No, your eyes are the same size they always are. The lenses bring light to a focus on the retina to give you clear vision, that's it. It does not change the shape or size of the eyes. Certain prescriptions will, like you said, make eyes appear larger or smaller. Near sighted prescriptions will reduce, while far sighted lenses will enlarge the image of the eye.

Nope.

However, if you have a prescription for hyperopia (far-sightedness) the glasses will magnify your eyes.

Then, since you are used to the magnified version of your eyes, when you take 'em off they seem smaller (normal-sized.)

This is why some women who are far sighted will wish to wear less eye makeup when they are wearing glasses than when they are wearing their contacts--the magnification can make it look like you have too much makeup on.

Same in reverse for very nearsighted women--they may wish to add a bit when they are in their glasses to "open up" their eyes a bit.
