Get contacts or stick with glasses?!

Question: I've been wering glasses since I was 6, now I'm almost 16. I really hate this seasons glasses frames (I'm very fussy) so I'm considering contacts.

I'm not sporty, I'd keep care of them, as I have been with my glasses. I know how they feel on, last time I was getting frames I couldnt see the glasses on my face, so they basically HAD to give me a pair.

1. What type of contact should I go for? Hard/soft/day and night/monthly?

2. I know they can give you dry eyes, but what else can go wrong?

Thanks! And tell me if you think I shouldnt bother with contacts at all.

Personally, though, I just love the wider scope of vision they give you.

My suggestion: Get both if at all possible. If you must choose, I would personally take the contacts.
I wore glasses for many years (still do) but when I changed to contacts, I knew I would never go back.
Contacts take that "feeling" of having something on your face away- I feel a lot more confident now that I don't have glasses, you can't sit on your contacts and bend them and you can wear shades!
The negatives to having contacts are that, if you are not diligent about cleaning them you can get an eye infection, you need to take them out when you swim or sleep. If you get something in your eye it can be VERY uncomfortable.
For me though, the positives have WAY outweighed the negatives.
A few tips, if you do go for contacts: I have always used monthlys. I find them good value for money, and easy to clean and use.
Keep a lens case filled with solution in your bag just in case, for some unforeseen reason, you have to take them out or clean them. It is also a good idea to keep lens friendly eye drops with you for dry eyes.
It is a good idea (but not essential) to have glasses as well so you can give your eyes a break. I take my "eyes" out when I get home and put my specs on.
Oh- another BIIIIG plus to wearing contacts- when it rains, you don't need "windscreen wipers"
:-) - Plus, my eyes have pretty much stabilised since I have contacts.

i agree with u bout them giving better vision and i heard that your eyesight detoriorates less as well........i find them kind of dangerous to use, specially fr ppl with sensitive eyes and thats y i never got them myself.........they r also high maintenance and expensive ( recurring expense).......but its still your choice about what u want

I kept both just in case. I used monthlies where you didn't have to take then out unless you have an irration. I hated having to take them out. glasses were a back up that I kept around like in my car or wherever just incase my contacts started tripping out. getting to dry or irrating my eyes in some other way. I just got lasik in Jan of 07 and it's like night and day! If thats an option for it might be something worth looking into. I love not having to wear glasses or contacts!

hi i have had glasses since i was 3 or 4 i hate them.
i have had my contacts for about a year now, i love them i can see so much more. i don't have to worry about them getting dirty or when it rains. i can shower easier, not have burn myself with the water or slip on something, cook without worrying about them fogging up and well lots of things. i have the contacts that need to be changed every two weeks and have to be taken out when sleeping, i still have my glasses for at night but i don't mind that so much its not for long.

i did find it tricky to start with, but now i can put them in without my glasses on if i have to.
so much better then glasses. hope that helps.

I'm a reasonably high miopic -5.75 and -6.5 which means short of high index glass - any glasses would be pretty thick. I also had pain behind one ear with glasses and had to wash them every morning. Also sport including swimming was a problem.

I have worn a major brand of contact lenses from J&J and I wear the ones that you can sleep with for 7-10 days at a time.

Well I have worn them for 20 years and often keep them in around 2-3 months usually they then fall out as they have hardened but I can only share with you in every way they have been a dream to me

There are many benefits to wearing contact lenses. There are also many different types of contact lenses. The most popular contact lenses are soft contact lenses and specifically disposable/planned replacement lenses such as 1-2 week lenses.

Some benefits to wearing contacts may include the following.
-They do not steam up like glasses
-Can be worn safely during sports.
-They can be more fashionable with outfits.
-Increased peripheral vision.(more natural vision)
-Easy maintenance with low risk of damage

Here are some easy contact lens maintenance steps.

1. Probably the single most important task to do before handling contact lenses is to properly wash and rinse your hands. Hands are used to handle many different objects through out the course of a day; therefore they are incredibly susceptible to debris and germs. If your hands have debris or germs they could contaminate your lenses or worse yet your eyes. It is important to also rinse your hands after washing them in order to avoid any soap residue from rubbing off on to your contact lenses.
2. It is important to use the appropriate solution when rinsing your contact lenses. Follow the instructions carefully while cleaning and rinsing your lenses, some solutions require different steps.
3. When you are done using your contact lenses it is important to make sure that your contact lens case/container is free of any debris. Fill the case with the recommended disinfectant solution in order to kill any microorganisms that could be on your lenses. By following this last step you could avoid any risk of eye infection.

To answer the dry eyes question, there are new lenses that have come out to optimize air flow to the eye. I would research Silicone Hydrogels for instance. Here is some info.

"Silicone hydrogel lens is at least 6 times more permeable to oxygen, a characteristic that is vital to the well being of the cornea. Surface modifications brought about by the application of special wetting molecules render this silicone hydrogel material more flexible, moist and resistant to dehydration."

I hope this posting and its information helps you.

oh go ask the optomertrist about those crazy overnight ones sarah had that fix your eyes!!!
otherwise if they make soft ones for your perscription get soft monthy ones. day wear only though but why would you need them while your sleeping?
they might not make them in your perscription though (they make them like .something off mine so i get really tired when i wear mine) then you will have to get the hard ones. they get irritated a bit easier and are waaaaaaay more expensive
plus if you lose one you have to buy a whoe new set (like $200 every time you lose one)

as for dangers umm if you fall asleep in them they can get stuck to your eyelid or migrate to the back of the eye. then you have to get an opperation but this is VERY rare. oh and if your eyes decide to hate them after a while like mine did every time you try to wear them you will just cry them out lol
so its a good idea to have a pair of glasses as well anyway.

hope this helps!

i use to wear glasses and then i tried contacts and i absolutely LOVE them. me and my best friend both wear acuvue soft 2 week disposables and there great. there SO comfortable i usually forget i have contacts. and both my friend and i have almost never gotten bad dry eyes and we've had them for over 2 years. for me they were hard for the first week but now i don't even think about it when i put them in. my mom has hard contacts and she's always complaining. she gets dry eye a lot and dust hurts her eyes a lot more then mine. overall i would highly suggest getting them, they really do provide eyesight all around and my friend stopped getting headaches when she got them!

im gonna say... CONTACTS
