I used to do this thing with my eyes...?!

Question: When I was younger (around 9 or 10) I would just sit completely still and focus on one certain object in a room for a good 10 minutes or so. Afterwards my vision would get all wacked out and everything would look as if it was about five feet further back. Something right in front of me would appear to be feet away. No one has any idea what I mean when I say this and I was wondering: is this normal at ALL? It only happened once in awhile and it hasn't in years, but I still wonder.

This sounds like what happens when you stare at those "Magic Eye" pictures--when your focus adjusts a certain way, you suddenly are seeing the flat image in 3D.

People with normal binocular vision can do this and it's usually a fleeting image. If you did not have vision in both eyes it would not be possible.

It won't hurt your eyes to do this and it is pretty cool. When I was young, I remember loving to stare at my stippled ceiling long enough to make the stippling seem to invert.

lol what ?::))

I've never experienced that. But then again I don't have the pateince to stare at something for ten minutes straight... Sounds like it could happen though.

hi

I know what you mean. That specific thing doesnt happen to me, but I notice my eyes doing weird things, that I know other ppl dont get.

I cant say that I know what you mean.

i used to experience something simular but it only blured my vision it wasnt as if i was seeing figures and stuff

yess i remember when i lived at home i used to stair at the lined wallpaper in my bedroom and i had the same thing happen, it used to be quite freaky but weird so i would keep doing it, i forgot about that untill i saw your question, i may try again :P i dont know why it happens though sorry

I used to do that, when i was doing it people were calling me a freak, i was usually looking at a bin or something lol.

I cannot do it anymore :'(

It was really cool though you da star for reminding me :D

My nephew is doing the same thing, but he is only 1 yr old. The neurologist thinks he is having seizures. He is going for a test on Friday to find out. Pray things are OK. When he starts in this mode you cannot get his attention at all. NOT even his mother.

To have good eyesight with no problems is more important. You don't have to worry about something nobody knows the cause.

That is a good way to increase night vision if you practice it in the dark

hahaha, i know what you mean, i used to do somthing like that then got advised i shudnt do it so i dont mess my eyes up... its probs not good for you..... we must just be easily amuszed =p

If you stare at something long enough it is likely that your eyes will naturally adjust to that focal length, just as if somebody who wears glasses was to leave them off their eyes would adjust to a certain degree. There's nothing wrong with it and certainly wouldn't cause any lasting damage, a worst probably a liitle bit of eyestrain.
