I believe they have to earn them, and there is a whole ceremony for the handing over of the coveted 'Perv Specs' at their paedophile ring conventions.
To much playing with the favorite toy makes them go blind, so they do it until they are really short sighted and then have to stop!! lol
I have been unfortunate enough to have to work with paedophiles, whilst working in partnership with the Probation Service and have never met one with thick lensed glasses. Chillingly some of them look like regular young men.

its not so much thick rimmed as very very large glasses - like the sunglasses that are now in but clear ones.
i think its because they have no money and are in jail and their glasses never get replaced since the eighties or nineties??
I think its so they can see the computer screen more clearly.

For reasons unclear the stereotypical paedophile, shown in films years ago, did seem to be portrayed like this. More modern media examples look rather less sinister, making them less easy to spot.
