Opthamologists are doctors who are licensed to practice medicine. Optometrists are only licensed to dispense glasses and contacts.

Some doctors just don't want it just like some people dont want it done.

They give you more than vallium....they also apply a general topical anesthetic so you cant feel anything.

They probably wear glasses to magnify what they are seeing. This is very fine and presition work.
Ophtalmalogist=Trained treating eye problems like regular Doctor.
Optometrist= Fitter of glasses

The previous two members obviously have no idea on the training of optometrists or ophthalmologists. I'm an OD and i treat diseases every day, just like you're beloved ophthalmologists. The only difference is that they do surgery and I don't.

AW and Larry really downgraded the actual qualifications of an Optometrist there , Huh ?

Really have to wonder why so many people who have no clue in certain technical areas still feel they have to answer.

Well, now that you know the first two respondents don't know the ophthalmologists or optometrists differences, similarities or qualifications let's answer your questions.

LASIK, PRK and other refractive surgery procedures change the shape of the front of the eye to help you focus far away and be less dependent on contacts or glasses. There are a variety of reasons that we doctors still wear glasses. If my vision is only slightly blurred and my prescription refines the vision, then I do a cost-benefit analysis when considering surgery. People who have very strong prescriptions and whose activities are restricted without wearing glasses, experience more benefit from the surgery.

If the ophthalmologist or optometrist is older he may need a little help to read notes, charts, and anything else that is close even if they had LASIK. Refractive surgery does nothing to make your eyes behave younger. You will probably need help at near sometime after you reach 40 years old.

I don't expect my physician to have experienced everything that he performs on his patients. Since LASIK does not cure a fatal disease and is an elective procedure, your ophthalmologist or optometrist may have just made a personal choice by wearing glasses. Some doctors undergo the surgery only for its marketing value to potential future patients. The reasons for having the surgery or not are very personal, as I am sure yours are.

The procedure requires your attention, so I doubt that you will be sedated. Get a good night's sleep, and relax. Remember you are not even close to being the first person to undergo LASIK.

Wishing you well on your upcoming procedure.

I'm in the process of getting lasik in 2 weeks and I noticed that some of them wear glasses too. I asked the doc and the coordinator if they've had it done, and the coordinator did and she had glasses so she could read up close. Some people can't get lasik because of the thickness of their eyes or other eye problems. That could be why, or lasik isn't something they are interested in.
They do give you valium or if you're super nervous you can choose to have an IV type thing to calm you down.
Good luck!

They are waiting for even better technlogy for the eyes.
