Lasik! Am I a good candidate yet?!

Question: I've worn glasses since freshman year of highschool and now I alternate contacts and glasses. I've always wanted lasik surgery to repair my near-sightedness, but I read up on the rules and found candidates under 21 weren't good. Plus, I've read your prescription needs to stabilize over a year before the surgery is appropirate.

I'm 23 now, and my prescription has barely changed in nearly 3 years now. Does that make me a good candidate, or should I wait longer? Also, what's the deal with loss of night vision? I've heard that's a real concern with the surgery.

I had my LASIK surgery done at 27. Part of it the reason was financial though. You have been stable for a while in your precription so that's good. I get a little blurry at night with things like roadsigns that shine or reflect light back at you, but I had that with my slight astigmatisim anyway before the surgery so no loss there. You're definately functional at night though...at least I am.

If you can afford the surgery go get an evlauation screening. They tend to run around $100. If you get a green light from your doc it's just a matter of scheduling the procedure.

You should be 21 for CustomVue lasik or 18 for regular lasik. Usually, your prescription must be stable for about a year. They also have to do other tests such has pupil size, cornea density, and tear production tests. 98% of Lasik Docs offer a free consultation to see if you're a candidate. As for the night vision, CustomVue lasik has better night vision fixes. If you have glares or halos with your current vision, then you will have a higher chance of having them after surgery. CustomVue corrects a lot of those problems though, where as regular lasik doesn't. Hope that helps!

Lasik surgery is performed in very high myopes generally above 25 years. The surgery has not yet been so much popularized; as after 35 years, your short sight power start getting reduced generally up to 55 or even 60 years, when finally at the fag end of your living you may not require glasses at all. So it is better to rethink about the lasik surgery in consultation with your ophthalmologist and follow his advice.

Yes, is ok for u to do it. Since everythign seem to be fine. It is only for liek 3 months that the nite vision and dryness will bother u.
