How long do you have to wait before getting water into your eyes after LASIK?!

Question: I had LASIK performed on 26th Feb '08, and was told not to get water into my eyes (eg. in the shower etc) for the first couple of months afterwards, as this increases chances of infection. But now it's April is it safe to do so - still being careful not to get soap or anything harsh in my eyes though.

Thanks.

You should avoid activities that cause water to get into your eyes, such as swimming, for at least a month after LASIK. For the first week use cooled down water from a kettle to clean around the eye area - with a piece of gauze, and avoid getting water into the eyes in the shower for about 2 months after. After 2 months it is ok to get water into your eyes but stay away from soap, shampoo etc, as there is a chance that it will get into your eyes causing irritation, and also you will feel the need to rub your eyes, which may dislodge the corneal flap.

I wouldn't worry about the shower. The big concern is that you'll get soap in your eyes and rub them which could dislodge the flap-so don't rub your eyes:) Avoid the pool, hot tub, lakes, ocean etc for 2-3 months because of bacteria. Good luck!

Yes, is safe but still avoid that is the best
