Even in fairly ancient times, there were different tasks to do, so people with the sharpest vision would hunt and watch out for enemies etc. People with poor vision might do jobs that don't require good distance vision, such as weaving cloth or baskets, grinding grain, making pottery, etc.

Good question! I have a -12.00 prescription and I cannot function without my contacts. I'd pretty much be the equivalent to being blind.
