How to convince my mom that contacts are safe enough?!

Question: A few weeks ago, I went to the eye doctor, and I asked my mom if I could get contacts. She told me about how she used to wear contacts but then she stopped and all that... And she thinks contacts are too risky (for like eye infections, etc.) and says I shouldn't risk "beauty" or whatever for "health". Some of my friends have worn contacts for years and never had a problem. She says "You can get laser eye surgery when youre older". not to be bratty or anything, but I want contacts now way more than I will when I'm older. She won't even let me TRY them at all to see how they affect my eyes.
How can I explain to her how contact lenses are safe enough?

Talk to your mom, and see if she'd be willing to just go TALK with the eye doctor about contacts, and their benefits/risks. She might feel more comfortable about you getting them if she's able to talk to the eye doctor herself, and address any concerns she has about contacts. Most people do feel more comfortable about them after they've spoken with a trained professional and gotten all the facts on contacts. Contacts are actually very safe as long as you take good care of them (proper cleaning/storing, changing to a new pair as directed, only wearing them each day for as long as recommended, etc). Contacts are definitely a lot safer than laser eye surgery...anytime you are talking about any kind of surgery, there are ALWAYS risks involved...and with laser eye surgery, blindness is always a possibility, even though there have been tremendous advances with it nowadays.

Good luck!

have her talk to the eye docter, he'll probably say they are just fine

it depends on your age if your under 16 some opticians are a little hit and miss on fitting you for them, but you could explain to you mom that contacts are different from many years ago, they are now in disposable forms, daily and monthly, so you just throw them away at the end of the day after using them.therefore you need little to no cleaning products for them which maintain the hygiene of the contact lens.once your responsible enough to attend regular aftercare checks ups with your optician there really is no reason why you can't wear them, the key thing to remember is the aftercare check ups!!!

My mom works for an optometrist, and believe me, there are a lot more risks to laser surgery than wearing contact lenses!

Have your mom talk to your optometrist so she can get the facts and have all her questions answered.
