They really aren't sure how much is genetic, how much is environmental and how much is just incidental!. The research does sho a slightly higher incidence in families with it but only slightly, so it can run in families, but it also can be that if you are predispoised genetically you might be ok, but lets say something else can trigger it!.!.!.!.be it second hand smoke, or uv rays, or a blow to the back of the head, or any number of other things!. You might not have it happen to you unless you have certain factors that come in to play!. They are just not all that sure!. Even so, in the genetic predisposition they can not even identify the gene that would be the one that makes it happen!. So, being that they can not even tell you what or where it comes form in any specific person, there has not been any one specific group of people that it would be prevelant in!. It is really rather interresting!. I am not a doctor, but in the people that i have worked for and with in the last 27 years, they also seam to think that therre are other overall health factors that might play into it, almost as iff the keratoconus would be a symptom of another underlying over all systemic problem!. One doctor I worked for said that it was weird that most of his Keratoconus patients were middle aged and that he rarely saw any older ones, so he felt that maybe they had an earlier mortality rate but that he could not find any studies or evidence to support that, it was only an observation!. It is a rather interresting problem though to research!. I hope you learn more about it!Www@Answer-Health@Com
