In australia, it is a 5 year course, and you finish with a therapeutic qualification, (meaning you can write prescription for some medications)
It is relatively easy to find i job (i hope), as in rural australia they are in high demand!. Starting salary can vary from $50,000 to $100,000 depending on who you work for and where you work!.
I guess the main advantage of being an optometrist, is that you have the second most knowledge of any profession about eyes!. (Ophthalmologists being the first) And you can use your knowledge to help people, in an area that most people fear, ie!. losing your vision!.
Before starting an optometry degree anywhere in the world, i would recommend that you enjoy meeting, talking to and helping people!. Enjoy the study of health sciences, and some physics, and you feel like you could find eyes very interesting!!! (because you will see a lot of them)

Optometry is one of two eye care professions, the other being ophthalmology (which is a branch of Medicine)!.

Not sure if there is any advantage as such!. However, there is no substitute for this branch of health care profession!. It is easy to understand, very sofisticated and good business to be in!.

In India, it is a 2 years full time course!.

Not sure, but I have seen many openings in big hospitals and long queues outside the good recognised opticians!.
