"You failed " only means that your results were outside what the nurse had for a "no action" criterion, falling into the "needs follow-up examination" category!.

20/40, 20/30 means your vision is a bit below average!. No alarm bells at all, except to prompt that examination to find out why, and whether anything needs to be done about that!. I can easily think of circumstances where someone with that vision would not need glasses, but that wouldn't necessarily be a good thing!.
The most likely cause, however, is a small refractive error of some sort!.
the 20/xx numbers don't give a clue to that, only to the degree of relative blur present!.
In that case, once you get to see how much better you could be seeing, it will be your decision as to whether, and if so how often, you want to use the glasses!.

Will any Rx get worse!? It will or won't whether or not you get any glasses, and if it's short-sight and you're a teenager then in most cases it tends to increase until you stop growing (18-22 years of age, usually)!.

The 20/Whatever is a method of comparing your vision to the vision of a "normally" sighted person!.

20/20 means that you see an object that is 20 feet away with the clarity that a normally sighted person would see that same object at 20 feet away!.

20/40 means that you see an object that is 20 feet away with the clarity that a normally sighted person would see that same object at 40 feet away!. In other words, your vision is worse than normal!.

You have probably already figured out that 20/30 means the clarity of an object 30 feet away!.

You must have 20/40 vision or better to be able to drive without corrective lenses, so you are just at that point with the one eye!.

You may be becoming nearsighted or farsighted, you have have some astigmatism!. If you are older you may have a cataract developing!. You may have a reaction to allergies, medication, or even hormone changes, if you are a woman!. Many women have wide fluctuations in vision during pregnancy!.

The cause of your vision change and the necessary remedy can only be determined by a comprehensive examination by a competent eye doctor!. It looks like you are on your way!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are fine and the school nurse does not know what she is talking about!. You have pretty good vision!. 20/20 is considered normal vision!. 20/30 means that you can see an object at 20 feet when a person with normal vision can see it at 30 feet!. The same goes for 20/40 vision but replace the 30 with a 40!.

You are most likely nearsighted but could be astigmatic or a combination of the two based on those numbers!. There is no way to know for sure!. The eyeglasses decision is really up to you!. If you are having problems reading the board at school, you may want to consider getting corrective lenses!. If your vision is not bothering you, then you will be fine without them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Most likely you are near sighted!.!.that means you can see well up close but have more difficulty with things far away!. However, with that said, 20/40 and 20/30 vision is legal in all states to drive without glasses!. It is not perfect vision and you may find that when the eye dr!. gives you a little prescription in the machine and shows you how much better you can see with it, you will be amazed!.
You are not legally blind by any means!. My guess is that he/she will suggest that you wear glasses when you want to see better in the distance!. As for eye exams in schools or doctors offices!.!.they don't always get lined up at the proper distances so just go see your eye dr!. and hear what they have to suggest!. Good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

!.!.!.

That is actually good vision!. Who ever said you failed is a moron!. Mine is 20 200!. And I passed without glasses on!. :\Www@Answer-Health@Com
