Keep in mind there are side effects that the doctors usually gloss over when doing their initial exam and consult!. I had the surgery done a couple of years ago!. They did both eyes during the same appointment!. The surgery itself went better than expected (I'm a total chicken)!. And once the recovery time was over, it was GREAT to see without having to wear glasses (have worn glasses since I was thirteen and I was 39 when I had the surgery)!.

The two major side effects that can happen DID happen with me!. One, my tear ducts were damaged by the surgery so I now have severe dry eye which on the surface doesn't sound too bad but is in reality annoying as anything -- gives me headaches and I have to use special drops constantly!. Two, my eyes are now reverting back!. The doctors say they shouldn't go back to what they were pre-surgery, but they don't know for sure!. They continue to worsen bit by bit!. So as it turns out, I'm back in glasses!. But only for when I'm watching t!.v!. or driving at night!. They can "re-do" the surgery when my eyesight reaches a certain point (where the benefits outweigh the risk of doing the surgery again)!. I don't think I'm going to do it again though; I'm worried about what further damage may occur if I do!.

A minor side effect that I'm stuck with is a "halo" effect that happens at night time when I'm driving!. Street signs and car lights and street lights, etc!. seem to glow!. This is easy to deal with though once you get used to it!.

AND the surgery will not keep you from needing reading glasses as you get older!. Needing reading glasses as you get older is caused by a muscular issue, not the eye itself -- so the surgery can't fix that!. According to my doctors anyway!.

On the other side of the coin, my ex-husband had the surgery done before me and with the exception of minor dry eye (only needs the drops once or twice a day) , he's doing great!. No problems at all!. Everyone's situation is different!. The shape of your cornea plays a role in the success of the surgery and the possible occurrence of side effects as does having a astigmatism and general eyesight (how bad your eyesight is)!.

So my advice -- think long and hard before having it done!. Talk to more than one clinic and/or more than one doctor!. After doing the research (and asking pointed questions of the doctor you choose) if you think the benefits outweigh the risks, then go for it!.

**ADD**
Topical anesthesia in the form of drops IS used during the process!. While you won't feel any pain, you will be aware of what's going on!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, mine wasn't "recent", it was nine years ago!. But I recommend doing research (gathering facts, not just personal opinions) as the best way to calm your fears and decide if this is right for you!. Read the literature in detail, so you know exactly what happens at each step!.

Take it seriously, and go for the best, not the flashiest!. The only horror stories I found were from people who had the surgery in some lossely-regulated country or by some hack in the mall ( do you really want delicate surgery in the same place you can get a churro!?)!. Don't kid yourself, this is serious surgery, so go for a real surgeon in a real hospital or medical center, not a fly-by-night "med spa" in some strip mall!. Don't be seduced by financing or wild claims - these are your eyes, so invest in the best!.

Ask the doctor straight out what his complication rate is - how many of his patients have experienced blindness, worsened vision, ongoing pain, etc!. If his answer is anything besides "absolutely none", then move on!.

To clear up some misconceptions:
-They always operate on just one eye at a time, and carefully measure that eye before they begin on the next!.
-No you will not be able to drive yourself home or go back to work the same day!. You eyes will be weak and light-sensitive and dilated for hours, if not several days!. You will be able to putter around the house, but TV/books/computer won't be much use to you, so have someone stay with you!.
-Yes it looks really weird when they do the cutting and lasering!. Very trippy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes I recommend it!. The process is no big deal - you don't feel it there are no nerves and no anesthesia needed!. It just makes you nervous when the put the thing in to hold your eye open - just relax and think about the great vision you'll have!. The light rays at night (rays coming off of lights) took a little getting used to, but it's not a problem and I don't really notice it now!. Spend the money on the best Dr you can get, if just for the peace if mind or a 20/20 guarantee!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You do need to consider all the risks, and there are a lot of them!. But to me, the risk was well worth the outcome!. You'll have to do your homework on the doctors that perform the surgery and I would recommend using a clinic that is well known or that you know somebody personally that has been there!. I used TLC Lasik (the company that performed the surgery for Tiger Woods about 10 years ago)!. But I went there because I knew others that had gone there before me!.

You can do both eyes separately, but the recovery time is basically doubled!. I did both eyes the same day!. The surgery itself took 15 minutes at most!. Both eyes are numbed and they give you a Valium before hand to help keep you calm (and to help you sleep when it's over)!. The first eye they do the surgery on is the easiest of the 2!. When they start on the second eye, your body has an idea of what is going to happen, so you trick yourself into feeling a little more pressure than the first one!. It was more of being uncomfortable than pain!. My husband drove me home and I slept for about 4 hours!. The longer you sleep, the more your eyes heal!. There is a bit of a regimen with 3 different eye drops, but nothing that was horrific!. If you have pets or small children, you'll need to wear the goggles they give you more than if you don't!. You'll need to wear the goggles at night so you don't mess with your eyes while you sleep!. But it wasn't too uncomfortable!. You'll need good sunglasses!. Bright light is a bit much at times, but is fine with glasses!.

Most places will give you the option of watching somebody else going through the surgery, but I don't recommend that!. The video is fine because it's not a real human!. My husband said I may not have gone through with the surgery if I had watched it in real life first!. I'm a bit squeemish though!. You may be fine to watch something like that!.

I would do it again in an instant!. I think it's the best investment I've made!. I went to an amusement park with my husband and a couple of friends!. I was the only person that was able to read a sign out of all 4 of us!. I recommend it to anybody that's thinking about it!. Especially if you're in your 20s or 30s!. The surgery does great for the problems you have now, but doesn't stop the aging process!. Eventually we'll have to wear reading glasses again, most likely in our 40s!. I'm 28 now and figured I'd get as much time in without glasses as possible!. That's my opinion!.

Everything is up to you!. You'll need to do the research and figure out if this is really something you want to do and if it's worth the risks!. For me it totally was worth the risk and the price!. LOVE MY "NEW" EYEBALLS! :) Hope this helpsWww@Answer-Health@Com

my dad is not only an optomitrist but he has had it done!. he loves it and is letting me get it done when i'm 15 he thinks its amazing and he was cranky for the 24 hours after cuz you have to sit in a dark place and just like sleep but after he was sooooooo happy he got it done and recomends it to everyone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can only speak from my ex-co-worker's opinion!. She got it done a few years ago (I knew her before she got the surgery) and she said it was $ well spent!. I would do it but because I've seen the procedure being done on someone on TV, I'm too chicken!. lolWww@Answer-Health@Com

in case it might not work do it on 1 eye then if it goes sucessful which it has a 75% chance of doing it then get the other eye usually if it goes wronog they ll try to fix it dont worry i had to get it becuase i was near blind and i had to go to school so it works and i have eagle eys manWww@Answer-Health@Com
