Question: Can someone explaine my prescription!?
I had to start wearing reading glasses a few months ago!. Can someone explain my prescription for me!. I think the second number means i have some astigmatism!. Does that mean i will have to wear glasses for both reading and distance vision in the future!?!?

Answers:
Your prescription indicates that you are mildly hyperopic (farsighted, longsighted), and have very low astigmatism (the cornea is not spherical like the top of a ball, but is elliptical like the back of a spoon)!.

These numbers, however, may lie!.

Hyperopia is commonly caused by the eye being shorter in length than normal!. The focal point of light entering the eye and passing through the cornea and the natural lens is behind the retina (the light sensitive membrane at the back of the eye that changes light into nerve signals for the brain)!.

When at rest, the normal eye is focused for distance vision, about 20 feet to infinity!. To see objects closer than about 20 feet the natural lens within the eye has to change shape and thereby change focus!. This is called accommodation!.

At your young age you are easily able to accommodate!. You do this automatically and without any conscious effort!. What often happens when a young person is hyperopic is that the eye will "focus around" the hyperopia!. In other words, your natual lens is never at rest and is always focusing to resolve the hyperopia!.

A manifest refraction (which is better, one or two!?) is the primary method of determing refractive error like hyperopia and astigmatism!. The problem for a young hyperope is that you can focus around some or all of the hyperopia and a manifest refraction would indicate very low or no hyperopia when hyperopia actually exists!.

A cycloplegic refraction (which is better, one or two!?) is done with eye drops that temporarily paralyze the natural lens so it cannot focus around anything!. A cycloplegic refraction would most likely to reveal true refractive error in a young hyperope!.

You may want to ask your eye doctor if this prescription is based on a manifest or cycloplegic (sy-klo-plee-jeck) refraction!. You also will want a cycloplegic refraction at your next exam!.

Your Rx is similar to mine!. The first # (the sphere) has a plus number in front of it so that means you are farsighted!. The second number (the cylinder) means you have an astigmatism!. The closer the numbers are to 0, the better your eyes are, so your Rx is pretty mild!. My cylinder # also has a minus sign in front which to my knowledge means it helps with distance correction for your astigmatism!. The last digit, the axis, just indicates where on the lens your astigmatism is (I think)!.
My Rx is +!.75 -!.50 x90 in both eyes and my optometrist told me I will need bifocals in 5-6 years (I'm 34)!. Depending on your age, you may need bifocals as well if your eyes are on the same path as mine!. I found that my glasses help a ton though right now!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are much too young for wearing reading glasses, unless you always needed them!. If the prescription you provided is your reading glasses then you don;t need them!.

Although glasses are only to help you see and doesn't make them betther or worse, you shouldn't have to where them for at least another 17 years!. Glasses have no bearing on the health of your eyes!.

The amount of astigmatism you have is right then no you will not need to wear them forever!. An astigmatism just means that your lens is not perfectly round and makes your vision a bit distorted/Www@Answer-Health@Com
