The loose skin on your eye is the conjunctiva and is freely moveable!. When fluid from allergy etc!. gets underneath it it swells (chemosis) and becomes visible, especially over the edge of the lower lid!. I would bet on allergy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Luckily your eye is the fastest healing part of your body, so if it's a problem that can be solved, it'll be solved with little pain!. Unfortunately the eye is very delicate!. I'm not sure what you mean by "covering" of the eye, but it's possible you've damaged your cornea or detached your retina!. The latter is a medical emergency!. If you can, despite the time, call the ER and ask for their advice, they should be able to tell you if you should come in or not!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like an allergic reaction to something!.!.!. did you eat or touch anything out of the ordinary prior to going to sleep!? I don't think you'll lose your eye but I'd recommend you call your doctor, the answering machine usually has an emergency number you can call!. If not, you may be looking at spending your night in the ER!.!.!. Sorry my friend!.!.!. good luck with that!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Heard about going to a doctor!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

If your vision is OK and there's no pain, it is very unlikely to be sight threatening but that cannot be taken as an absolute certainty!.

There is a lot of loose tissue around the eye and eyelid lid (in part because it needs to move freely) so anything which causes a release of histamine, as part of the body's defence mechanism, can easily cause marked watery swelling and redness!.
A minor infection, insect bite, allergy, chemical toxin*!.
None of which are likely to be of long-term significance!.

Yes, it should be seen by a doctor at the earliest convenient time: an urgency, not an emergency!.
Yes, keep it cool if that makes it more comfortable, but it's not imortant, and call your doctor in the morning!.
Unless there's pain or loss of vision, which would change the situation!.

*something like a cleaning agent you might have had on your hands when you scratched at the skin: but if you were scratching because it was itching, it's more likely it was a insect bite, and the reaction was already starting!.

Best I can do without seeing it!.
