If you are referring to the instrument in which the doctor will put up to his eye and look into the patients eye, this is a direct ophthalmoscope!. If you are referring to an actual pen light it is a transilluminator!. These are usually used for checking pupl reaction!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are different types of ophthalmoscopes, they are all used to look at the retina!.

The one you are thinking of is direct monocular ophthalmoscope!. Direct means you are looking straight at the retina through the pupil (some instruments require you to look through other lenses and you see the retina upside down or inverted)!. Monocular means you are using one eye and you can only see the retina in 2-D!.

Pen light or pen torch is just a pen with a small light on the end!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

ophthalmoscope is the technical term, pen light is a whole other thing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
