Wow, you are not legal for driving in any of the fifty states if your vision is less than 20/40 so I'm not sure what the dr!. is basing it on!. Is that your vision in both eyes!. If one eye is 20/20 and the other 20/80 he/she may feel that correcting the one eye could cause double vision or headaches!. I don't know!. But plain and simply, your vision is weak enough that you should be wearing a prescription all the time for distance!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
It depends entirely on what is causing your vision to be 20/80
Your prescription probably has some astigmatism involved!.
A prescription like - 50 - 50 X 90 , could cause you to have a 20/80 visual acuity, but isn't strong enough to get contacts!.!.!.!.or at least not have as good a vision as you would with glasses!.
Just knowing your visual acuity is 20/80 doesn't give any real idea of what the prescription is that you need!.
There are many combinations of mild prescriptions that contacts won't work for!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have 20/20 in my right eye and 20/50 in my left eye!. I wear a contact lens in my left eye!. My doctor even recommended using a contact lens to better balance my vision!.
