Optician or ophtalmologist?!

Question: Optician or ophtalmologist!?
I am French and do not fully understand the health system in the UK!. I need glasses: do I need to see an ophtalmologist (fi in a eye hospital) or an optician (in a glasses shop)!? Is a prescription required!? is is OK if I do not want to see a GP first (I have one but I lack time and anyway I have a private insurance)!. Thanks for your help, it's getting hard to read for me!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
In the UK, 90%+ of eye exams are performed by optometrists
(old title Ophthalmic opticians: "examining" opticians!.)

They are qualified to examine eyes, prescribe Rx where required, and to detect disease, and refer onwards where appropriate!.

It would be unusual to see an ophthalmologist for a normal refraction exam, and you don't need to see a GP first!.

You have a right to the copy of your Rx which you can take elsewhere if you wish!.

There is however, one good reason to get the exam and the glasses at the same place: if there's a problem, the people who made the glasses (usually *dispensing* opticians) will tend to say it's the Rx, and the prescriber will say it's how the glasses are made up!.
If that's the same firm they can't wriggle out: whichever, it's still their problem!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

In the USA, Optometrists and Ophthalmologists can examine eyes
for a prescription!.

Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, and Opticians can fill prescriptions
for eyeglasses!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

In the UK you need to see an Optometrist ('ophthalmic optician')!. You don't need to see an Ophthalmologist!.
Go into any high-street Opticians and ask for an eye test, most will be able to do one on the spot for you!. It will cost around
