Does eye color effect how well a person can see in the dark?!

Question: Does eye color effect how well a person can see in the dark!?
I have blue eyes!. A Hispanic compadre of mine has brown!. As we are often out together late at night, it has become clear that I can see things at night when she cannot!. She says that eye color is the reason for this!. She has told me that the gene for blue eyes came from people living in the arctic where there is less light!. As a result, they evolved to have slightly better night vision!. While her heritage comes from closer to the equator where there is more direct light!.

While this makes evolutionary sense, I am not sure she is correct about the mechanism for improved night vision it this is true at all!. As I understand it, night vision comes down to how much light the pupil allows to reach the retina and how sensitive the retina is!. I do not see how the color of the iris affects this at all!.

So, is there any evidence showing that eye color impacts night vision!? Sources will be appreciated!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can't find any information about this online, but your friend's explanation does make some sense!. People with lighter colored eyes are at higher risk for macular degeneration, which is caused by light damage to the retina, which suggests that the lighter eyes let in more light!. The iris is a muscle that contracts and expands, but people's pupils vary in size too!. Some people have very large pupils, and that would obviously allow for more light to enter the eye!. Maybe you just have larger pupils than your friend!.

People with blue eyes have brown pigment on the back of the eye, to prevent too much light from getting in, so I'm betting that it's more related to pupil size!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
