In simple words, explain Astimatism?!

Question: In simple words, explain Astimatism!?
I've worn glasses my entire life and I'm getting contacts soon!. Apparently I can't get the soft kind because of my astigmatism!. I just want to know what an astigmatism really is and why I can't get soft contacts!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Astigmatism is when the eye is shaped such that light doesn't focus at a single point, but rather at two points!. To correct it, you basically need two different powers of prescription -- one to refocus the light from the one focal point, and the other for the other focal point!. The way we do this is to have one power in one direction (say, vertically) and the other perpendicular to it (say, horizontally)!.
In glasses lenses, this is really easy to do -- you just make lenses from glass or plastic with the right power at the right places!. In hard (rigid) contact lenses, it's easy too, just mold the plastic properly!. However, when you make a contact lens out of floppy silicon or thin plastic, it's tricky to get it to stay in exactly the right shape in different directions!. Now, it's not impossible, so some people (like me!) with small to medium amounts of astigmatism can get soft contact lenses for astigmatism, called "toric lenses"!. However, the quality of vision often isn't as good as with rigid lenses, and large amounts of astigmatism can't be corrected with the soft lenses!. It's not that you can't wear soft contacts, it's just that you're unlikely to get good vision with them, and if your prescription is too strong, they'd be expensive, custom-ordered, frustratingly-blurry soft contact lenses!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Astigmatism is when the eye has a distorted shape!. A distorted eye gives distorted vision and this is usually much worse than regular short/long sightedness which is down to the eye muscles!.

In your case, your prescription may be too high for soft lenses, or you may need weighted lenses which can only be created in a specific lens format (whichever they are suggesting for you)!. A weighted lens is what it sound like, heavier in one part so orientates the lens in a certain way to align correctly to the shape of the eye and correct the astigmatism!.

This is about as simple as I can make it!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
